This report refers to exempt information by virtue of which the public may be excluded during the item to which the report relates, as specified in Paragraph 7 of Part I of Schedule 12A to the Local Government Act 1972, namely:-

Information relating to the financial or business affairs of any particular person (other than the authority)



1. Details of the case concerned may be inspected by members prior to the meeting, on application to the Director of Housing.

2. The sum shown below is irrecoverable and is submitted to the Executive for write-off approval.
3. The above case relates to former tenant rent arrears and overpaid housing benefit. The ex-tenant concerned was behind with her rent at the time of her death in January 2001 and in debt to the Council in respect of recoverable overpaid Housing Benefit. The Council was subsequently informed that the estate did not have any surplus after other expenses had been met.

Resource Implications

4. In accordance with recommended accounting practice, the Council maintains a provision for bad debts. This provision meets with audit requirements and is subject to annual review. The write-off in the table above is within the normal annual allowance for such items.

Recommendation

That approval be given for the sum of 8,326.33 to be written off.
