Use the sustainable development indicators set out in Section 10 to monitor and review Waverley's performance. Target: results published annually

Encourage involvement of Town and Parish Councils, Town Initiatives and local LA21 groups in all relevant aspects of the Strategy
6LA21 Groups actively encouraged to become involved in sustainability-related activities. Partnership currently being developed between the Farnham Initiative and the Farnham LA21 Group. Environmental Co-ordinator also gave a presentation on sustainable development and the work of local LA21 groups to Wonersh Parish Council’s AGM in 2002. T&P Council involvement yet to be actively sought, although all were consulted on draft of LA21 Strategy - propose to address this during 2003/04
Supplement educational and promotional material, practical advice and initiatives with more real and tangible sustainability actions of our own - will help to demonstrate how Waverley has been able to improve its own sustainability performance and, where possible, save money in the process
6The development of an Environmental Management System for Waverley, together with the review of our environmental impacts and resource use and how we are going to address them, will allow Waverley to demonstrate its achievements to others and inform them of how they can make similar achievements. Will apply to local businesses as well as the public. Various events with the public and local businesses to increase environmental awareness are already being undertaken
Offer help and advice on sustainability issues through practically based open-days at Waverley's properties and in the community

Ensure that 100% of the population of the Borough has the opportunity to learn what sustainable development is through the WISE initiative

6Training sessions for local businesses have taken place this year in conjunction with Business Support and the Surrey Programme for Environmentally Responsible Business (SuPERB). A page on Waverley's website on environmental advice and contacts for local businesses is also currently being developed. The Environmental Co-ordinator was also one of the judging panel for the Surrey Environmental Business Awards for 2002
Work with our partners to introduce a schools education programme
6WBC Schools Officer group set up to coordinate multi-departmental working on projects with local schools. Includes education webpage set up on Waverley's website with links to important and useful organisations, including Surrey County Council as local education authority, WWF-UK and useful education web pages
Undertake a training programme for Officers and Members on Sustainable Development
6Provisional agreement for inclusion of training session as part of induction process had been achieved; however, this has since been put on hold following changes to staff induction programme. Officer Wider Management Group held on sustainable development in 2002. Further work on Officer and Member training to be carried out in 2003/04
Publicise sustainable development issues and the LA21 Strategy to Officers and Members
6Will take place during 2002/03 as part of LA21 promotion. Sustainability issues currently promoted and addressed as part of the Best Value review process
Encourage an increase in the number of LA21 groups working in the Borough, and for them to be able to work more effectively to achieve their goals
7Two new LA21 Groups currently being established (Farnham & Park Mead in Cranleigh). Waverley LA21 Groups Meeting now undertaken quarterly, attended by the Director of Environment & Leisure, Environmental Co-ordinator and other relevant Officers. Event to promote work of LA21 Groups to be held in September 2002
Work with the Local Strategic Partnership for this Borough and use that as a further opportunity to extend community consultation and involvement
7Environmental Co-ordinator has been involved in the Ward Events for the Community Strategy, which aim to ascertain the concerns of the community. The aims, objectives and targets of the Community Strategy will also be reflected in future editions of the LA21 Strategy and its annual updates
Ensure that the people of the Borough have the opportunity to be consulted over strategies and policies
7WBC actively seeks to consult as many of the community as possible and has set up a Citizens' Panel, made up of a representative sample of the community, to consult regularly. Consultation takes place for new strategies and as part of the Best Value review process. Ward events also took place as part of the Community Strategy process to ascertain the issues of importance to local people
Ensure that any such consultation is better organised, managed and co-ordinated, using appropriate methods, including the internet

7Developing working relationship with WWF-UK; have carried out piloting programme for them and are working with their environmental management co-ordinator to improve Waverley’s environmental management system and look for further partnership opportunities. Also work in partnership with the Surrey Programme for Environmentally Responsible Business to promote environmental issues to local businesses. Yet to further relations with other partners, although many representatives of related organisations, such as Surrey Police and the Surrey Wildlife Trust, attended the launch of the LA21 Strategy
